


Her artistic and creative energy has resulted in directing and producing numerous audiovisual recordings with classical sitar. DC, The Smithsonian in Washington DC, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, College Park, MD, The Shakespeare Theater, Wash DC, The Metropolitan Museum of Arts, New York, The Harkness Hall, Yale, New Haven CT. She has performed in the US at venues such as The Kennedy Center in Wash. Laila has performed internationally at venues, such as The Purcell Room, London, The Kerala Arts Society, Kerala, India, the National Museum of Bangladesh, Dhaka, SRA/Bengal Foundation Festival, Dhaka, Bangladesh, the India International Center, New Delhi, The Manav Sanghralaya, Bhopal, India. She was fortunate to continue her study of Indian classical in sitar with teachers, Partha Chatterjee and Krishna Bhatt and Kushal Das. During her final years of training, she attended the College of Fine Arts in Dhaka, where she graduated in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree and received several awards for her watercolor painting. When not touring, lecturing and exploring the musical world, Alif Laila can be found teaching s her wonderful students at Sitar Niketan, the music school she established in Washington, DC in February of 2015.Alif Laila is one of the few internationally performing female sitar players of the world. Along with her incredible and mesmerizing solo sitar concerts, Alif Laila collaborates with many other genres and instruments such as jazz saxophone, cello, and world percussion ton connect with the global audience.Īlif Laila has nine CD’s available, and has directed and produced two Indian classical sitar DVDs.

Her ‘audio/ visual concerts with her watercolor paintings’ have been presented in cities and colleges across the United States, Bangladesh and The United Kingdom. She continues to bring her sitar music to a global audience, and has performed on some of the world’s top stages, including The Kennedy Center in Washington DC and The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Purcell Room, South Bank Center, London, UK.Īlif Laila always brings a unique musical experience to every show. An accomplished painter, Alif Laila holds a Bachelor’s Degree from The Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University, Bangladesh. She then furthered her education by learning under some of the finest sitar teachers, including Partha Chatterjee, Krishna Bhatt and Kushal Das. Alif Laila was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she began her formal study of sitar under her ‘guru’ (teacher) Ustad Mir Qasem Khan, nephew of the legendary Ustad Alauddin Khan.
